Livewell South West (LSW – previously Plymouth Community Healthcare) is an independent social enterprise providing integrated health and social care services for people in Plymouth, plus Community Services in South Hams and West Devon as well as some specialist services for those living in Devon and Cornwall. LSW span out of the NHS as a social enterprise in 2011, and came to us in 2013 for help to support their then 2,200+ workforce to build a stronger sense of identity behind the new organisation and maximise their levels of employee engagement, well-being and job satisfaction in delivering care to over 300,000 people.
Solution and outcome
We worked closely with LSW to implement a 3-phase engagement programme using our unique ‘Spirit of Ownership’ approach. Though LSW employees are not actual owners, we helped to put in place the key building blocks that would encourage employees to feel – and ultimately to act – like owners. We benchmarked their culture at Day 1 (using existing data and face to face sessions), and from that built a tailored engagement strategy. The roll out of that plan was wide-ranging, covering the creation of an employee council, strengthening the individual ‘employee value proposition’, supporting senior managers and Board, reviewing and strengthening communications channels and HR processes (recruitment to induction to performance management and training). Our work has since driven improved engagement levels and progress towards a thriving, participative ownership culture, as well as supporting factors that impact on LSW’s ability to deliver services such as recruitment and absenteeism.
