Child Dynamix is a Social Enterprise and Charity focussed on social regeneration in areas of deprivation in Hull with a strong emphasis on providing high quality early years provision. Having grown to a turnover of £1.4m, its strategic ambitions included recalibrating the balance of its traded income versus work funded by grant and contracts. It aimed to achieve this largely by opening a fourth early years setting, whilst building its asset base through the purchase of a freehold property to house the new nursery.
In 2015, Child Dynamix recognised its need for investment readiness support, and so engaged Baxendale to assist in securing successful long-term investment for growth.
Solution and outcome
Baxendale worked with Child Dynamix to provide market analysis to determine both local childcare sufficiency and uptake of funded places, which informed a detailed, investor-ready financial model, considering a number of relevant Early Years specific variables including the introduction of 30-hours childcare for working parents. We also assessed for the first time the social and economic impact of Child Dynamix’ nursery provision. We then worked with Child Dynamix and external social investors on an iterative basis to secure a blend of repayable investment and community grant funding.
Through this project, we raised £400k of investment for Child Dynamix to enable the development of a fourth, 53-place setting for disadvantaged two year-olds in an underserved part of the local community. This was the first successful investment raise under the DfE’s CIRF fund and was a key milestone towards Child Dynamix’s long term sustainability.
“Baxendale’s role as consulting partner has been refreshing. Their support both during and after the project and assistance in helping us navigate the route to achieving investment has been invaluable.” –Jane Stafford, CEO.
