I attended a very interesting and stimulating event today which was arranged jointly by the Employee Ownership Association and John Lewis Partnership. The line up of speakers was impressive - Will Davies (Reinventing the Firm), Richard Wilkinson (Spirit Level) , Philip Blond (Respublica), Charlie Mayfield (Chairman John Lewis) Prof Joseph Lampel (CASS business school) and John Kay (Financial Times). Reinventing the firm: who benefits from maximising shareholder value?
What is a business for? According to received wisdom within the business arena, the purpose of the enterprise is to maximise shareholder value. Working in the employee owned sector, this purpose takes on an additional dimension. The employees, either directly or indirectly, are the shareholders. This means that the company is run differently. The fact that the Board is accountable to internal shareholders means that the company is not driven by an external need for financial returns.
